Costa has made a commitment to Kick Plastic

Yes. Americans may be recycling more than ever before, but they are also consuming more than twice as much and generating twice the trash as other people around the world. Plus more and more plastic waste is reaching our oceans and other important waterways.  Costa spokesperson, Mike Holliday understands the importance of stopping plastic from getting into our oceans. “Eight billion plastic water bottles are made every year. Ten percent of those bottles end up in our ocean. There are plastic debris fields the size of Texas in five of our world’s oceans.”

As a manufacturer, many of Costa’s products are made with plastic. Yes, they have some work to do. When they began this project, they took a long look in the mirror.  Moving forward, Costa is working to kick plastic by reducing their packaging where possible, using more recycled materials and continuing to explore more improvements in the future. So how about it? Join Costa in making some changes and help them put plastic in its place.  By helping to spread the word and reducing their reliance on disposable packaging, Costa can help man the front lines in this fight against ocean trash and help kick our plastic habit.

Here are a few of Costa’s tips on what to do:

  • Stop using plastic bottles. A reusable bottle is better for the environment, more cost efficient and keeps your drink colder longer.
  • Say goodbye to grocery bags. Plastic grocery bags can be replaced with reusable ones. Yes, even produce bags.
  • Buying in bulk makes a significant impact. Sometimes we don’t notice the amount of packaging that comes with each product, but it adds up pretty fast.
  • Take plastic out of takeout. Decline bags and utensils when ordering takeout. You can even ask restaurants to pack food in your containers.
  • Reel in the old line. Change your fishing line routinely to keep old, stretched line out of our oceans where it can harm sea life. To learn more about monofilament recycling, visit BoatUS.org.
