For only a few hours on a Saturday morning, we need help with setting up education stations, checking participants in, handing out rods and reels, conservation and safety lessons and assisting children (and parents) with rigging, tackle and casting. We’ll supply refreshments, sunscreen, educational information and a fun raffle afterwards for our wonderful volunteers. Please note that these programs take place in the beautiful outdoors and away from computers and video games (thank goodness).
Get the Kids Involved (A testimonial from Paul Macinnis)
My daughter Anna first volunteered for Hook Kids on Fishing (HKOF) when she was six years old. Her sister Lily started joining us when she turned six. Together they have volunteered for dozens of HKOF events and have taught thousands of kids about conservation and stewardship. The experience has been priceless.Perhaps you’ve seen us teaching the safety station at a HKOF event. Besides safety my girls have helped out with setup and teardown, registration, distributing nametags, handing out rods and tackle boxes, teaching casting and more. The point is, there are plenty of ways kids can help out at a HKOF event.
My daughters aren’t the only kids I’ve seen helping out with HKOF. As a long time HKOF volunteer, one of my special privileges has been seeing former HKOF participants become HKOF volunteers.
Perhaps your kids have become proficient anglers and have graduated beyond HKOF. Great, we could use their help. In the next few months we have HKOF programs all over the state of Florida. Scan the AFC newsletters, website and Facebook page and you will likely find a HKOF near you. Volunteer and bring the kids or grand kids along, you both will be glad you did.
