On April 20, 2010 and environmental and economic disaster resulted from the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, effecting millions of people from Galveston, TX to Key West, FL. This included the entire states of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama, and many counties in the Texas and Florida gulf coast region. You did not have to have come directly in contact with the spill to be effected; millions of people were hurt economically from the lack of tourism, in the Economic Loss Zones. Tourism loss was felt by churches and non-profits, to convenience stores, restaurants, motels, hotels, and most forms of entertainment, from water sports, to miniature golf, horse back riding and more.
You, or someone you know, may be eligible to participate in the BP Deepwater Horizon court-supervised settlement. Class action settlements are complicated and they require unique knowledge of legal details, court protocol, and claims processing. You may think that your records don’t show a loss, but the court has set forth tables and formulas that may actually show that you did suffer a loss. BP has elected to settle with the court to pay $7.8 billion to Individuals, Businesses and Non-profit claimants. Potential claimants are urged to see if they are entitled to file a claim. The filing deadline is April 22, 2014.
If you are in one of the Economic Loss Zones, and can answer “yes” to one the following questions, you are eligible to file a claim:
- Did you or your business experience a decline in monthly revenue during the months after the spill?
- Did you or your business have a direct OR indirect economic loss from the impact of the oil spill?
