Tarpon season is here for the southeast US coast. Try something new and go tarpon fishing – kayak style!

All anglers have their comfort zones. For some it’s the flats. For others it’s lake fishing. Some are more comfortable with fly rod and others seem to gravitate towards bait. There are those who fish for nothing but tailing redfish and others who wouldn’t know where to begin in the saltwater and specifically target largemouth bass.

While there is nothing wrong with any of these examples, angling is such a diverse sport because it offers so many opportunities to step outside one’s comfort zone and learn something new. A person could spend a lifetime fishing and never come close to knowing it all. It’s one of the beautiful things about the sport. There is always another fish to catch, another body of water to learn, and more new lures and techniques than most anglers could fish in twenty years.

This month, challenge yourself to fish outside your normal routine. Hire a guide. Fish out of a kayak. Wade. Try fresh water. Try salt water. Check out an urban pond. Pick up a fly rod. Pass on your usual fishing hole and try that new section of water. It’s how we grow as anglers. It’s amazing how specific lures and techniques that are bogged down in species or regional bias can transcend so many different fisheries. There’s a whole world of fishing opportunities out there. Get out and explore them!
